Visualizing PV surplus

(Switch requires a dedicated light: Example using Shelly Plus Plug S)

Have you ever wondered if you currently have surplus power being exported to the grid, but your phone isn't at hand? With the Shelly Plus Plug S, you can create a simple, visual solution to show everyone in your household when sufficient power is available.

Step 1: Configure the LED ring

In the Shelly App, you can customize the lighting of the Shelly Plus Plug S LED ring. Select a color and intensity for when the Shelly is "On," indicating that power is being exported. Choose a different color for the "Off" state, indicating that no power is being exported. You can also set the Shelly to remain unlit.

Step 2: Settings in our app

You must configure the following settings in our app:

  • Enable smart control: Ensure that the device is set to be controlled smartly.
  • Rated power: Enter the typical power consumption of your household appliances here. For example, devices like dishwashers or washing machines usually require less than 200 watts, excluding the heating phase.
  • Increase grid export buffer: Increase the grid export buffer in the electricity meter settings. If you add 300 watts to the 200 watts at the switch, our app will turn the lamp on at a grid export of 500 watts and off again at less than 300 watts. For balcony power plants, the values should be set lower accordingly (e.g., 150+50 watts).

Step 3: Set the selector switch to "Smart"

In the device overview, you must set the selector switch of the Shelly Plus Plug S to "Smart" to activate the settings.

With these simple steps, you can ensure that everyone in the household can see at a glance whether surplus power is currently available. This makes energy efficiency a breeze!

  3. Enter electricity tariff: Enter your electricity tariff and, if applicable, the feed-in tariff of your PV system in your profile.
  4. Download Shelly Smart Control app: Download the Shelly Smart Control app to your phone.
  5. Register and create an account: Register and create an account.
  6. Connect Shelly Plus Plug S: Connect the Shelly Plus Plug S to the Shelly app.
